Background
Waiting for Demolition Plans from the Council. The owner decided to carry out some minor works.
In Oct 2019 (the main site Architect Sketchworks Architecture ), having researched specialist Durban contractors with significant experience in gabion mesh retaining wall systems, contacted Dson for advice and guidance.
Gabions are engineered welded wire mesh products for earth retention and soil stabilisation, erosion control and architectural applications
Initially, a mass gravity gabion retaining wall solution was considered, however given the confined space and the size of its footprint, this type of wall would have been too large. The alternative, and the client’s preferred solution, would require the installation of a post supported Gabions, installed in accordance with the variations in height of the adjacent ground, maintaining a 500mm width.
The main Architect Sketchworks Architecture appointed Dson Industries to help deliver a Post Supported gabion mesh cladding solution that would meet the structural engineering requirements as well as the wider project remit. The inclusion of the gabion cladding scheme would therefore be critical to the resulting success of the final structure and further complement the visual aesthetics.
Services Provided By Dson Industries
A number of challenges became apparent during the initial gabion wall design standard consultation process. The architects, in their original design, had
specified a nominal dimension of 550mm for their calculations relating to the width of the gabion baskets for the post-supported gabion wall and gabion cladding. By using this dimension, the standard mesh aperture (75mm × 75mm) would have resulted in the panel sizes being incompatible with any subsequent pro-rata calculations.
Two adjacent elevations of the new Garage were
in close proximity to the surrounding higher ground. To address this difference in levels, the elevated land would need retaining with an appropriate structure, whilst providing sufficient space around the building for access and maintenance. Due to the very limited space around the building’s perimeter, the overall thickness of the retaining wall solution was specified to be no more than 500mm wide.
As a result, Dson Industries fabricated the panels onsite to suit a revised design using tailor-made gabion baskets at 500mm wide with 50mm x 50mm mesh aperture
